Fertility Preservation for Men

Sperm Freezing

Sperm cryopreservation, or sperm freezing, is the most well-established method of fertility preservation for men. It has been used for decades, especially for post-pubertal men undergoing treatments like chemotherapy and radiation that could impair sperm production. This method is also commonly used in other situations, such as before military deployment or a vasectomy, to preserve fertility for the future.

Sperm freezing is a quick and simple process. Unlike more experimental fertility preservation methods for women, such as ovarian tissue freezing, sperm freezing is widely accessible and affordable. In this process, ejaculated semen is washed, and the sperm are frozen in vials. When the individual is ready to have children, the thawed sperm can be used for procedures like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Other Methods of Fertility Preservation for Men

For men who have no sperm in their ejaculate, urologists can use microsurgical techniques to extract sperm directly from the testes. In cases of retrograde ejaculation, sperm may be recovered from the urine and can also be frozen for fertility preservation.

Men undergoing radiation therapy can benefit from testicular shielding, an established technique to protect sperm production when feasible. CHR’s Fertility Preservation Center (FPC) offers sperm freezing and storage as part of its comprehensive fertility preservation services. We collaborate with expereinced urologists who perform microsurgical procedures, like TESE, when necessary.
