Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming part of modern medicine, including reproductive medicine. One area receiving growing attention is the use of AI to help select embryos during IVF. But can AI really identify the embryo most likely to result in a successful pregnancy?
To understand the potential of AI, it is important to first understand embryo selection. In a natural cycle, the body goes through its own selection process, typically resulting in one egg being ovulated and one sperm fertilizing that egg. IVF changes this process by allowing multiple eggs and embryos to develop, creating a group of embryos. When multiple embryos are created during a treatment cycle, embryologists evaluate them based on characteristics such as their development and appearance to help determine which may be most suitable for transfer.
Researchers are now exploring whether AI can add another layer to this process. By analyzing large amounts of embryo images and developmental information, AI may be able to recognize patterns that are difficult for the human eye to detect.
However, more information does not necessarily mean better results. While AI may provide new insights into embryo development, the important question is whether those insights can actually improve outcomes for patients.
AI is still a developing area of reproductive medicine, and research is ongoing. As the technology advances, it will be important to distinguish between tools that simply provide more information and those that can meaningfully improve IVF treatment.
