How does summer travel affect IVF treatment?

By Dr. Sonia Gayete-Lafuente, Fertility Specialist Physician-Scientist at CHR, New York

Today, as the warm season approaches, we’re going to talk about how summer can influence fertility treatments- because it does.

If you’re someone who has chosen to pursue fertility treatment over the summer months -navigating injections and heat, perhaps making use of some well-deserved vacation time to do so more focused- this is for you.

First, summer is peak travel season. People are flying more, changing routines, staying up later, eating differently, and many fertility patients naturally wonder: “Is traveling during IVF a bad idea?” The short answer is: not necessarily, as long as we keep a few important considerations in mind.

One of the most common concerns is whether flying can harm egg quality, implantation, or early pregnancy. Fortunately, there is no evidence that air travel itself negatively affects IVF outcomes in most patients. The bigger issue is usually the impact of disrupted routines such as dehydration, poor sleep, heat exposure, stress, and inconsistent medication timing.

This is particularly important because some medications must be taken at very precise times, especially trigger injections and medications used around retrieval or transfer cycles. Crossing time zones or having unpredictable travel agendas can therefore become problematic if not carefully planned. So if you have any doubts, always check with your clinical team.

There is also a practical aspect of traveling with fertility medications. Many IVF medications require refrigeration or temperature control, and airports, long flights, checked luggage, or prolonged time outdoors can complicate this if not planned properly. In these cases, we recommend carrying a letter of medical necessity from your physician, along with your prescriptions and supplies (including ice packs if needed), to avoid issues during travel. It is also important to bring enough medication for the duration of your trip, and ideally a little extra!

Another factor that is often underestimated is heat. During the summer, dehydration happens more easily, especially during ovarian stimulation, when the ovaries are enlarged and patients may already feel physically uncomfortable. Long exposure to high temperatures, alcohol intake, poor hydration, and overexertion can all make treatment more difficult. In these situations, staying well hydrated -particularly with electrolytes- can make a significant difference.

And then there is the emotional side: IVF can already be stressful, and many patients feel guilty about wanting to enjoy life during treatment. But mental health is also very important! Taking a trip, relaxing, seeing family, having fun, or even maintaining a sense of normalcy aside from IVF can be very beneficial for many people, and we’ll support you. There are only certain moments during IVF when travel may not be ideal; for example, around egg retrieval, immediately after certain procedures, or during phases requiring close monitoring. The key is always balance and clear communication with your care team to be able to plan safely.

In conclusion, the goal shouldn’t be putting your entire life on hold because you’re doing IVF, but understanding how to travel smart, protect the treatment process, reduce any unnecessary risks or stress… and definitely enjoy your vacation! Surely, well deserved.

Happy summer!!

Professional, knowledgeable and efficient. I would highly recommend this clinic.

Dr. Barad was and is amazing! He was personable and took the time to get to know us and initiated an interest in our story. He was kind and compassionate. He was transparent, but gentle. Our first consultation with him was a comfortable experience. I wish I would have been able to work with him years ago when we did our first IVF cycle. He helped bring the clarity and closure I needed. I feel very grateful and privileged to get to talk with him. I believe he and his colleague are doing a great work! May God bless them!

My wife said that despite of the fact her 1st IVF at this clinic was unsuccessful, every one was exceptionally kind and made her feel very comfortable. Dr Gleicher was very detailed in his testing and helped my wife discover conditions about herself that other RE's did not. She was happy with her experience.
