IVF for Single Women by Choice

By Dr. Sonia Gayete-Lafuente, Fertility Specialist Physician-Scientist at CHR, New York

Studies show that single women busy with their professional or other personal life projects often delay fertility conversations or even may feel more stress around starting those conversations. And honestly, it makes sense. Fertility discussions are still too often framed around couples, infertility, or crisis.

But it is 2026, and it is time to break that pattern. You don't need a partner to start tackling your fertility plans! So, if this resonates with you, or with anyone you love, keep reading.

If you are single, in your thirties or even early forties, and you dream of having a baby one day with the right partner, you do not need to simply wait for Mr. or Ms. Right to arrive.

You can start fertility counseling and fertility preservation now on whenever is indicated, most commonly through egg freezing, so that when the right relationship does come, there is less need to rush commitment, force timelines, or place premature pressure on the relationship. By the way, no woman should feel pushed into choosing a partner because of reproductive aging.

Of course, egg freezing is not a guarantee of success, but it definitely can be a powerful way to preserve options and create a little more breathing room.

Alternatively, if you are single and ready for motherhood now: let’s get going!

And here is the good news: although you may technically need fertility treatment, your situation will most likely be very different from what you have heard from friends going through IVF.

Most of women pursuing treatment because they are single are NOT infertile. They simply need access to sperm, timing, and medical guidance. In fact, these patients are often among our best-prognosis patients.

Of course, we still start with a basic fertility evaluation to understand ovarian reserve, ovulation, and make sure there are no factors we should know about before choosing the best plan; but for many single women, a few rounds of intrauterine insemination using donor sperm may be enough to conceive.

And that brings us to another important topic: finding the right sperm donor.

Today, there are many options, including sperm banks, agencies, and in some cases known or directed donors. There are also different ways to coordinate and transfer donor samples safely into the clinic, and we help guide patients through that process step by step.

Reassuringly, sperm donation is highly regulated in the U.S. Donors are carefully screened for medical and psychological history, infectious diseases, genetic risks, and other eligibility criteria. In third-party reproduction, screening is taken very seriously, and donor sperm from regulated sources is tested and cleared before use.

So, your work is not to navigate all of this alone. Your work is mainly finding a donor you feel comfortable with, whose profile aligns with your values and goals, and, frankly, someone you like.

In conclusion, single women deserve proactive counseling, honest information, and individualized family-building plans based on life goals. Not assumptions, not delays, and not unnecessary fear.

So, whether you are waiting for the right partner and want to preserve options, or you are ready to become a solo mom now, there is a path for you! And if you have questions, or you are interested in learning more about your best next steps, please contact us. We would be happy to meet you where you are, and help you build a thoughtful plan for your future family.

While I was not successful in conceiving at The Center for Human Reproduction, I would absolutely recommend them. As someone who may be considered a more complex case, CHR gave me hope during a time when I truly needed it most.First and foremost, everyone there is wonderful. Friendly, kind, compassionate, and incredibly supportive. Even the front desk staff greeted us by name almost daily, which made such a difference during an emotional process. Maria and Sonia were especially exceptional, and I am also grateful for Dr. Gleicher. He was realistic while still being compassionate, and I trusted his professional opinion and expertise. The only reason we are no longer with CHR is because we are from Texas, and after spending two months in New York for two IVF cycles, we decided to pursue treatment closer to home. Now that I have experienced another clinic firsthand, I can honestly say the overall experience at CHR is unmatched. The ultrasounds, bloodwork, communication, organization, and cohesive care all felt efficient and personalized. As an out-of-towner, I also appreciated their Upper East Side location. Walking through Central Park after appointments became part of our routine, and somehow made a difficult experience feel a little lighter.I will always be grateful for the care, kindness, and hope CHR gave us.
